Pacing, what pacing? Things came together pretty well for me at this race. I went out “too fast” and kept up a pace I thought was “too fast” for most of the race. I had a couple of slower laps on Sunday morning. Then, as I started my final lap, hoping I could finish it off in less than 2 hours, I noticed that my legs were feeling a bit tired. I quickly forgot that and started worrying about the wind that had been picking up intensity all morning.

If you have read the previous posts then you are aware that a major Federal Summit is about to begin addressing the problems of “Distracted Driving”.  As to why a summit even has to occur regarding this issue is beyond believability other than as usual the government is behind the curve. But then again, not trusting the government, we can also see this as a stalling tactic to keep from doing what should have been done along time ago. For anyone who has bothered to keep up on this issue it is a no brainer.

Yesterday I ventured out to Sequim on my motorcycle. I had a few errands to run and needed something to do while Lindsay and the kids are away. While waiting for some film to be developed I thought I’d cruise around and see if anything was going on. Something I’ve been wanting to do is begin photographing the community. That’s really broad, I know, but while I wait for a definitive project that begs my attention and is flexible and open enough for me to pursue, for now a really broad scope is working for me.

The weather, the gambling action, the leather and the chrome all attracted higher attendance for Street Vibration 2009.  Maybe the lack of hype or the “ sky is falling ” press about impending club-on-club violence helped?  There was a positive “vibe” in the city which I’ve not observed in a couple years.  I ask and didn’t hear much from street vendors about the current recession is the new normal… yada, yada.

This is my second time racing at this event. If you’ve followed this blog for a while you know that we like to show support for the high school chopper challenge. This event helps high school students learn how to plan and build a show worthy custom motorcycle. Most of these programs receive little or no help from the school districts except for a facility to use for the build. Thus all of them are looking for help of any kind. Such is the case of Dan Kerlin’s class at the Clearfield County Career and Technology Center .  The kids up there are planning an old style chopper and are in need of a rigid frame.

The seven-time AMA Grand National Champion, riding the Denis Manning-built No. 7 streamliner, recaptured the provisional outright world and national land-speed records on Thursday, Sept. 24. Carr’s two-pass average of 367.382 mph in the measured mile was set at the AMA-sanctioned Land Speed Shootout at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

I have never been fond of the task of shopping for a motorcycle. It made no difference if it was a new or used motorcycle. Of course, I liked walking around the bike lot on a Sunday afternoon and browsing the motorcycles. But, when it came to talking to the dealer and making a deal on a bike face to face I have never been comfortable with it. Then one day I had my first encounter with motorcycles for sale online. First Lap That really does sound like an oxymoron—like Jumbo Shrimp.   But it really means a type of motorcycle and a race that lasts five hours—sometimes eight hours. Sponsored by CMRA, this race was at Oak Hill—just a bit north of Henderson Texas and in East Texas. Pine trees, cows, and giant earth mining equipment surround the race track. Chris Carr and the BUB Racing team have done it again. Carr piloted the BUB Racing Streamliner Seven to a new motorcycle land speed record of 367.382 mph yesterday on the Bonneville Salt Flats at the Land Speed Shootout promoted by Mike Cook. The record is pending ratification by the FIM, but until then Carr has bragging rights once again as the fastest man on two wheels. Carr shot over the salt with an average speed of 367 mph on his first pass over the recorded mile, with an astounding 372 mph exit speed.

I wish them well…and yet…   TEXTURE I feel dully nauseous from the hot asphalt nearly liquified— my nose hard hit by the scent of ice cream perspiring thick sugary dollops combined with the flat stink of stale aluminum beer… by the sun-melt smell of polymer-based plastic.

You can ride safer by following these quick tips on motorcycle safety:
1. Always assume that you and your motorcycle are totally invisible to other drivers.
2. Leave plenty of space in front and back and to the sides from all other vehicles.
3. Beware of motorists turning left in front of you at intersections.
4. Never drink or take drugs and try to ride a motorcycle.
5. Avoid riding at night, especially late Saturday night and early Sunday when drunken drivers may be on the road.
