If you had asked me about a year ago if I would have been in favor of yet another form of racing invading the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I would have said a resounding NO. However, having seen the videos of the Grand-Am cars on the road course at Indy, I think I would like to see them try it.The Indianapolis market has been asked to help support some pricey events at the historic Speedway. I’m not sure that there is a market to support sports cars on an annual basis at the track, but I liked the idea that Curt Cavin threw out the other night.

A Labor Day 75-mile motorcycle ride for cancer patient Sonja Luker will take place Monday. Registration will be at 9 a.m. at the Alabama Wing House at 124 Lindberg Avenue in Atmore. The ride will begin at 11 a.m. The ride is $20 per bike or $25 for two riders. There is a $5 entry fee for a bike competition, and a $20 entry fee for a car show. The event will also feature life music, food and fun activities for the whole family — including face painting and a bounce house for the children.

I tend to pay attention to the news stories about pedestrians and cyclists getting killed by cars. I do this because I am a bicycle commuter and a frequent walker. Quite frankly, cars scare the shit out of me. While cycling home yesterday and encountering yet another close call with a car situation, I thought of a news story of a young girl who was killed in a crosswalk in Shoreline several years ago. And then I thought to myself, oh my God, my grandmother died in a crosswalk.

Tommy Urbanski, the Las Vegas strip club manager who was paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot at the end of a brawl sparked by disgraced NFL player Adam “Pacman” Jones in 2007, continues to recover from his near-fatal injuries. Urbanski and his friends at the Vegas’ outpost of Hogs & Heifers recently organized a charity motorcycle ride for Kids on the Go!, a charity that helps needy families purchase wheelchairs and other equipment for disabled children.

Her name is Peggy Conley, and for 15 years she traveled the world doing what she loved: golfing. Conley was born in Seattle, but moved to Spokane with her family when she was 5. When she was 11, she joined her father on a trip to the Indian Canyon Golf Course, and her father let her hit a ball. “I was instantly hooked,” she said.

Real Estate agents really do have a life outside selling homes. I know sometimes it seems like all we do is work (ask our families!) but we do enjoy other things too. Today I brought a motorcycle helmet to one of our agents. Why is that a big deal? Because her birthday celebration next weekend is for her 74th birthday!  Barbara Salisbury and Rhonda Fry are celebrating their birthdays together.  One is turning 74 and the other is turning 47!   I asked Barbara about this adventure and she said it was exciting like her birthday 2 years ago when she went white water rafting.  I hope I am doing exciting things like this on my 74th birthday!

As we head into the first weekend of September, the motorcycle competition calendar, is pretty full – the World Trials Series is in Spain, the World Superbike is in Germany and the World MotoGP is in Italy. The Spanish event, will start Saturday with the last round of the European Championship – this series tends to get overshadowed by the top class World Trial, which is unfortunate, as without the supporting classes, none of the World events are really viable for the organizing club.

Recently, doctors told Sonja Luker of Molino to prepare for the end because, once again, chemotherapy and radiation were unable to destroy all of the cancer cells attacking her body. As Sonja tried to come to terms with the devastating news, she began to wonder how she will tell her children that she will not live long enough to see them marry, how she would tell her parents that she would probably die before them. But then there was a glimmer of hope that has turned into a real promise.

Both of my two sons really like old cars. Both of them grew up around classic cars while hanging out in the shop as kids. My oldest son learned to use a spray gun on his Honda motorcycle when he was just 12 years old. My youngest is currently working on a 1931 Model A which he traded a 1956 Ford for.
